My Sermon

"To be a great philospher is not merely to have subtle thoughts...but to love wisdom as to live according to as it dictates, a life of simplicity, independance, magnamity and trust"

Anyone guess who said that? Yep, my main man Henry David. As if Walden wasn't an awesome book, theres The Gospel According to Larry, this is an amazing book. i read it a little while ago, and am reading it again. If ever i would cheat on brandon with a book, it would be this book. I love it. Its based of a lot of Thoreau's writings, and it makes you think about youre own life. READ IT!!! although it is fiction, i think.

Anyway, on to my philosophical rant. Anti Comercialism!!!! Why do we subject ourselves to being walking billboards for Abercrombie? Look around you, your brain is being fried by television ads telling you what to wear, what to eat, where to eat it at, where to buy your clothes, what shoes you need what makeup you need to look like this.... it is annoying. Don't let trends or the idiot box control you life. Live a life of passion. and be ambitious. Don't live life from day to day like i did for so long thinking only of yourself.

Another thing, is have tolerance. Have tolerance for people who don't think the same way you do. I had this problem for a while too. I judged people to quickly, like Ashley Strickler, she's really cool, i just thought she was a stupid prep for a really long time and it was totally selfish of me. Tolerance doesn't mean you have to think the same way it just means you should respect them as a person and there opinion. And be open to there point of view. You don't have to be stuck in your ways. I totally understand what you were talking about in the last two paragraphs. Maybe if I had read the book you were talking about I'd understand more but I don't. anyways, comercialism would be fine if it didn't cost so much and take up so much time, IMO.

Stereotyping, though, seems to get worse if you accept that people are a certain way when they are around certain things or people. I find it hard to classify people because almost everyone goes into more than one group. I don't know how my thought patterns are suposed to mean anything to you but I just figured you'd like to know how I saw it.

Commercialism....quite annoying yet overly abundant. But someone has to walk around like a billboard for free....otherwise how would we know about such fine products?(oozing with sarcasm)

Now, on to tolerance...you are definately right on that one. Tolerating is the key to existing in peace, but it's not like you have to be buddy-buddy with those that you tolerate...just let them exist and work on your own life.

Quite right you are.

kinj,

We weren't prepared to do so this year, but next year, we're going to get a bunch of bags and pick the fallen cotton off the roadsides here (it spills out the back of the truck as it's heading to the gin). Getting the seeds out and carding it will be time consuming, true, but the reward of completely free garments will be worth it!

Well...that and farming for yourself.....we get those two down and everyone's good to go:D

No, the farming for yourself thing would be a flop.

The only way that would work is if everyone grew different crops, but since you only have so many options in a given climate you might not be able to grow the desired food. (ex: In florida they grow a lot of tropical fruit. We grow a lot of vegies. They need our veggies and we need their fruits.) If we are growing our own food than it won't work too well, will it?

Captain,

Actually, you need to be aware that the aboriginal people (Indians in America) didn't have to trade for enough food for an adequate diet. As an herbalist, I can tell you that every ecosystem possesses everything that is needed to support life; you simply need to find what was meant to grow there...and grow it.

Even climate can be controlled. We are putting together plans for a 150 square foot greenhouse on the back of our house (which has a nice southern exposure) to grow tomatoes, strawberries, and other expensive to find in quality produce items for our area. With fresh tomatoes selling at $2-3 a pound around here this time of year, we could sell at half that and still make a tidy profit (the greenhouse will cost us as little as $100, but no more than $1500, depending on our choices of materials).

Frankly, our goal is to put our little chunk of Texas to work to its fullest potential and work towards self sufficiency. It is, from everything I have read, a VERY reachable goal.
