Get Off Your Sorry Butt and Make Things Happen
Published on March 2, 2005 By NotSoSmellySarah In Philosophy
Life is not a video game with God at the controllers. I'm sorry but that's not how it works. God is the Father, He takes care of us, watches out for us, listens to our cries, and fixes things when we mess up. But He doesn't control what happens to us. There would be no need for Jesus or Salvation or Redemption if it was that way. I hate when people say well whatever God has planned. I do know what God does place people and situations in our lives SOMETIMES for a divine purpose. But we make our own descions. We have to work to get what we want. Prince Charming isn't going to just magically show up on your door one day and be like "hey, i'm the guy (or girl) God planned for you to marry!" It doesn't work that way. You can't expect that or the job of your dreams to land in you lap without working first. I believe in seeking God to find out what's best for you, but you have the choice to do that or go against it. There is always a choice. The human race is not like God playing with Barbies and Kens. If youre not satisfied with your life, fix it; don't sit around waiting for it to magically change. You tell God what you want and you pursue it.

Sarah you can't say things like this and call them fact.

That's what faith is all about - the different branches of Christianity differ mainly because of this one aspect - Predestination. Are we already programmed - there's a plan good and bad and we just have to walk the path
OR is life a choice do we get to choose which paths we want to take.

It's about interpretation Jeremiah 29:11 - I know the plans i have for you says the Lord, Plans to prosper and not harm you to give you hope and a future (paraphrased by me from NIV but i can look up the actually verse if you like)

Right on! The first part of the bible talks about this stuff. If you've read the first few chapters you should know that. I know how frustrating it is to hear people say that God will fix everything or that he'll make sure his plans are followed. His only plan is marked out in the ten commandments and obviously that one's not working so well, so yeah... I can't see God "controlling" us.

You are right on the mark Sarah. Good article.

trina~ while I respect the effort I can't even think that the subject deserves to be discussed beyond that. if we had a set of plans then every human being on the face of the planet could kill themselves right now and go where God planned them to. God's plan is for us to live with him but man has hardly ever followed his plans. He flooded the earth for that reason.

It's about respect - for some people their faith denotes that YES God is all knowing all pwerful and he's got a plan that we do just blindly go along with never questioning.

There are some people (books even ever heard of Rebecca St James or Josh Harris) who believe that God has created one person for everyone and we just need to wait on HIS time.

You can't just tell people that they're wrong and need to believe what you do - Faith (and friendship) doesn't work like that. Might I suggest you become informed about other peoples beliefs and...can't think of the word it's not opinions (I need a nap)

**Rebecca St James -- Contempory Christian singer who wrote a book (and song) called Wait for Me
Josh Harris - author wrote I kissed dating goodbye and Boy meets Girl

"God helps those who help themselves"

I believe that's from someone somewhere....and I think that should sum up what you're trying to say. We each have to carve our own path in life...whether it is predetermined or not we can't sit around and let things fall where they may.

Trina~ i know that verse by heart. I can say them like they are fact because to me that is the truth. In my eyes, that is my faith. That i need God but I have free will. God has things in store for us. If you read before that verse you'll find that it talk of the people of jerusalem and that they were going through some hard times. You have to work and make your own descions for those plans to come to pass. I am saying that God is the father every father has good plans for their children. I am saying that without our own free will there would be no need for salvation. The Old Testament gives proof that people make there own descions. They want to please God, but they actually have to act on it. They can expect to sit around and pretend like God's going to just make everything better, and we do nothing. Abraham could have been like okay well you know i can just sit here at the edge of the mountain with issac here and God's going to make it okay. But no he decided in his own mind to get up and do what God said. He had the choice. How are you to find something if youre not looking for it? How are you supposed to gain something if youre not working for it? God has plans yes but we have the power to make them come to pass.
Brandon~ thanks.

Heard the song, Hated the Book Kissed Dating GoodBye. I can't even finish it. It annoys me. The Song Doesn't mean that she's just waiting. Shes looking. She's not just saying hey i bet God will just send in the mail.

Oh and if God made us all so different why would he expect us all to act, think and be the same?

Centuries of religous scholars and philosophers would disagree with you--but, alas, I am sure you know more than all of them.

The great thing about thinking that we have no control of our lives is that we don't have to take responsibility for the consequences for our actions.
